Financial Accountant - Business Units (BU)

Job Purpose
The position will be in-charge of subsidiary relationship with the Group finance team; the position will oversee that BUs report to the Group in a timely and accurate way and that internal controls and compliance are effected across the subsidiaries.
Nature and Scope
Reporting to the Manager Group Finance, the Financial Accountant (BUs)  will maintain a close
relationship with all the BUs financial departments and will be their primary contact person at the Group level.  He will ensure that Group policies, procedures and internal controls are adhered to, all reports (financial, budgetary and others) are submitted by the BUs timely and ccurately to the Group.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure that BUs submit all their reports to the Group in a timely manner.
  • Review all the reports (financial and otherwise) sent by the BUs for accuracy and compliance before forwarding them to the relevant persons
  • Ensure that all the BUs are compliant with their country specific regulatory requirements and with Group policies.
  • Review the BUs annual reports for compliance, completeness and consistency.
  • Assist in BUs budget reviews,  review monthly BUs expense analysis and budget variances
  • Enhance compliance of internal controls in the Group and ensure that the subsidiaries comply.
  • Follow up and ensure that of all audit issues are resolved within the BUs by regularly reviewing the status with the subsidiaries and coordinating with the team heads to find solutions for these issues.
  • Implementation of OPI recommendations  relating to finance in the BUs 
  • Regular review of the group accounting policies and procedures and make recommendations to the Group on new or amended application if any becomes relevant and assist the BUs adopt the same.
  • Undertake research on specific areas of Group’s operations with a view of improving the procedures and accounting processes, implementing and ensuring adherence.
  • Identify training needs for the BUs teams  to ensure high quality reporting, adherence to internal controls and anticipation and management of risks
  • Oversee the reconciliations of the intercompany accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Deal with all financial related and audit queries from the BUs and their auditors

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
  • Bachelors degree in accounting or equivalent;
  • A qualified accountant (CPA K)
  • Computerized accounting applications such as ERP systems will be an added advantage
  • Computer Literacy in Ms Office Suite of packages.
  • Has at least 5 years experience in the insurance or financial services sector, 3 of which one interacted with IFRS reporting and budgeting. 
  • Experience in a Group set-up and strict adherence to internal controls will an added advantage

  • Reconciliations and analyses of accounts accurately done and on a monthly basis.
