Project Assistant – Adolescent and Youth Protection – Kenya

The Danish Refugee Council is an international non-governmental organization that promotes and supports durable solutions to the problems faced by refugees and internally displaced people all over
the world. DRC has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa region since 1997.

The DRC Kenya Program is seeking a qualified candidate for the following position:

The Project Assistant will support the Project Officer to conduct trainings for adolescents and youth in line with related grants and outputs. The training forums are focused on life skills development, resilience and child to child methodologies.

 Key Responsibilities:
  • Mobilization of community members, adolescents and youth for participation in community led/centered activities such as awareness raising campaigns
  • Data collection using agreed upon monitoring and evaluation tools under the guidance of the Project Officer
  • Attend monthly planning meetings and support in the development of monthly programme work plans
  • Provide direct supervision/capacity building and day to day management of Community Incentive Workers in the Adolescents and Youth Protection Project
  • Represent DRC in coordination and information sharing forums as and when required.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Diploma in Social Work, Community Development, Development Studies or other relevant social sciences; Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will have an added advantage
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with communities in a refugee/IDP set up
  • Experience in designing and facilitating training sessions for young people/adolescents
  • Good communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English Kiswahili.
  • Demonstrable ability to adapt to changing programme priorities and emergency priorities that may arise
  • Positive attitude towards community work with emphasis on the ability to learn from communities and support innovative approaches to problem solving
  • Strong self-starter, able to take initiative and adapt to changing circumstances and priorities
  • Experience in a refugee setting and knowledge of refugee issues is highly preferable
  • Candidate must be able to work in a socially sensitive environment and willing to take responsibility for personal security and adhere to DRC’s security guidelines
Posting Details:

This position is field based in a non-family duty station. Kakuma lies at security phase 3. Accommodation is provided at the camp level and for every 8 weeks spent in the region, DRC allows a staff member 5 days of Rest and Relaxation (R&R).

Availability: Preference is for candidates who are able to take up the position immediately.

Contract: Until 31st December, 2015 with possibility of extension. This position falls under the DRC Kenya National Salary Scale
