NewLight Africa Job Vacancy in Kenya : Business Development Manager

Job description

NewLight Africa (NLA) is looking for an outstanding individual to help launch and establish an exciting new business in rural Africa; a business with strong commercial potential which will deliver huge social benefits as well. We are looking for a Business Development Manager who will thrive in a ‘start-up’ environment and grow with the company. You’ll have proven marketing, sales and commercial ability.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic planning.(10% of the job) To work with the NLA team to develop the distribution model to be executed and proven in Year 1. With specific focus on:
Customer bases (e.g. schools, clinics, school children, public)
Routes to market
The product range
Financial performance

GOAL: To help develop a distribution model that is commercially successful and ready to be scaled across Kenya and the East African region.
Business execution.(20%) To set-up and start executing the business in Kenya. Specifically:
To recruit the right team; and support them with appropriate goal-setting, training, performance management, etc.
Secure the necessary assets and resources to deliver the plan (vehicles, office equipment, etc.)
To ensure that the plan is being executed as agreed; and to make constant recommendations for the improvement and development of the model.

GOAL: To ensure that agreed plans are quickly and successfully executed; and evolve in the course of the year.
Sales and marketing.(50%) To ensure that NL Kenya hits its monthly sales and P&L targets. Specifically:
To ensure our teams are hitting their sales targets; and if not, to take remedial action.
To analyse which products are selling well and which need to be phased out.
To listen to customers and agents and make recommendations for new products to be sold.
To ensure that our staff and agents have the right products in the right places to be able to keep selling.
To execute the agreed marketing strategy in support of the sales efforts

GOAL: To ensure that NL Kenya hits its sales, as well as, profit and loss targets.
Performance monitoring. (10%)To support the NLA management team to develop the right systems to monitor the performance of the company and report to the NLA management team and Board. Specifically:
Budgets v Actual spend
P&L
Cash flow
Performance against agreed measures such as agents recruited, sales achieved, etc.
Reporting on monthly performance to SMT and Board

GOAL: Development of reporting systems that ensure the company is clear on how it is doing against plan and able to make necessary adjustments to strategy.
General.(10%) To undertake whatever duties are reasonably necessary to ensure the success of the company. But specifically:
Developing in-country partnerships
Supporting fundraising efforts (commercial and grant); including hosting of investors, potential investors, etc.
Representing the company publicly
Getting hands-on in doing everything needed to get the company working successfully in Kenya, including:
Setting up a new office
Purchasing vehicles and other equipment
Dealing with Kenyan authorities for company registration, regulation, etc.

Nature of the job and line management

This is a start-up. The successful candidate needs to be comfortable in a very small business environment without much corporate support in the first year. They will report in to the Founder and CEO, Steve Andrews, and in time, to the Managing Director of NewLight Kenya (NLK) who will be Nairobi based. Steve is based in the UK but will spend 50% of his time in Kenya. He needs someone who is:

Delivers results
Is sales focussed

The candidate may be based in Nairobi but needs to be comfortable spending 75% of his/her working days in the rural areas – two counties yet to be chosen but likely to be in Rift Valley and Western Provinces – managing teams, executing our marketing strategy, talking to customers.

Desired Skills and Experience

Essential experience
  • At least 5 years experience in a sales and marketing environment including setting and achieving sales targets
  • Must have run a P&L centre and be familiar with financial reporting
  • Must have set up a new organisation, departments or service within an existing business
  • Must have built-up and managed high performance teams
Skills
  • A knowledge and understanding of budgets, P&L and cash flow monitoring
  • First class communication skills
  • Excellent use of the English language (written and verbal)
  • Strong emotional intelligence
  • The highest levels of integrity and honesty
  • Is entrepreneurial; but can follow through on agreed plans
  • Is motivated by working in a ‘start-up’ environment
