Job purpose

Ensure operational and compliance risks within the regional offices are understood and managed
within the risk appetite and also ensure that the regional entities are in compliance with regulatory and supervisory requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Liaise closely with the Compliance Manager and the Operational Risk Manager to ensure rollout of the ERM Framework across the regional entities.
  • Monitor risk in country businesses and communicate information to the relevant stakeholders to ensure the continued effectiveness of the enterprise’s risk management strategy
  • Work actively with countries to identify, quantify, mitigate and monitor operational and financial risk
  • Ensure sound risk management practices and group risk policies are embedded in business processes in the country businesses
  • Lead risk assessment activities which involve analysing risks as well as identifying, describing and estimating the risks affecting the country businesses
  • Carry out risk control self-assessment for each country and carry out stress tests and scenario analysis
  • Develop risk reports for a variety of audiences
  • Roll out staff training programs that build risk awareness within the country businesses
  • Develop initiatives to build an appropriate risk culture within the regional business units.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time
Working Relationships

  • The Business Country Risk Manager will be:
  • Accountable to the Group Chief Risk and Compliance Officer
  • Liaise closely with the Compliance Manager and Operational Risk Manager
  • Directly responsible for staff working under this position
  • Required to liaise and work closely with the Business Unit Heads, Department Managers and Unit Managers in country businesses as may be necessary.
  • Liaise with the Heads of the Regional Businesses as first points of contact with regulators in Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique.
External working relationships
  • Required to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with third party service providers to ensure quality and cost effective services are provided to Britam
  • Are the first point of contact to the country risk team
Knowledge, experience and qualifications required
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration or related field
  • Professional accreditation in Risk Management desired.
  • 7 - 10 years’ experience in operational risk/financial risk management, 3 – 4 years of which should be in a managerial role
