In East Africa they are represented in four countries i.e Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. Kenya is the hub of East Africa business and offers marketing & sales support to the rest of the EAC community.
They are seeking to recruit an experienced Medical Science Liaison Officer, APP, East Africa.
High Level Function
Cardiovascular diseases are a major emerging public health concern worldwide and account for approximately one in ten adult deaths in Africa.
Hypertension in particular is a growing contributor to morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as an underlying symptom of many disease areas.
Often associated with the developed world, the burden of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases is increasing rapidly in low- and middle-income African countries – yet access to medicine remains very low and few living with hypertension in the region are treated and well-controlled.Our ambition is to make a meaningful difference to patients in Africa through:
Increasing rates of hypertension screening, treatment and control in sub-Saharan Africa in a sustainable way, while supporting business expansion
Appling our business and scientific expertise and resources to address the Cardiovascular needs of 10 million African patients by 2025, helping to meet the WHO target of reducing the incidence of high blood pressure by 25% by 2025.
Africa Partnership Programme (APP) is part of our new strategy for Africa.
The programme aims to promote awareness of associated risk factors and lifestyle modification for hypertension prevention, as well as increase rates of screening, diagnosis, treatment and control in Africa in a sustainable way.
The program will begin in Kenya, and, working closely with governments, international organizations, health experts, non-governmental and community-based organizations will expand its geographical scope in coming years as our company and its partners learn by doing.Role Overview: The APP programme model is to deliver education and awareness, screening & guidelines and affordable medicines to patients in markets we have limited presence today.
The APP programme’s ambition is to roll out across Africa and
The MSL, APP will be responsible for three areas:
Providing Medical leadership and support to the NGOs managing the implementation programme
Providing input and support to the engagements with key stakeholders in the Ministry of Health, Senior government Officials, Senior NGO leaders and other stakeholders in the Market Access landscape
Monitoring and providing guidance on the adherence of our compliance and regulatory frameworks
Key Accountabilities:
Provide us with an understanding of the local medical community, clinical practice trends, HCP and patient insight and real or perceived gaps in current scientific knowledge and medical treatment
Work with NGOs and HCPs as partners in scientific activities that help advance disease understanding (such as assistance in the development of guidelines)
Working with internal APP stakeholders including the UK, regional, SA and SSA based stakeholders
Remain abreast of latest scientific knowledge and developments in defined domains of expertise, including by means of participation in structured training programmes.
Identify HCPs with the scientific expertise to collaborate on forward thinking medical projects complimentary to the programme
Ensures adherence to internal standard processes and complies with regulatory and compliance requirements.
Engage in strategic planning meetings with NGOs, Ministry of Health officials and other key stakeholders where the discussion of scientific topics is clearly separate from discussions of promotional and/or other business topics.
Provides guidance and acts as a role model to support ethical decision making and proper prescription of medicines in the implementation of the programme.
Work closely with the Access and Affordability manager to drive strong engagements with policy makers and key stakeholders in the implementation of the programme.
Provides expert medical advice and customer insight to contribute to the development and delivery of programme strategy and operational plans.
Ensures strategic alignment with Regional & Global medical team.
Provides medical input to the concept development of promotional materials/activities for the APP:
Reviews and approves promotional materials in line with local and global Marketing Codes of Practice.
Review and approve all promotional material and activities and related outputs with particular responsibility for suitability of documentation, accuracy and adherence to codes of practise and legislation.
Provides expert medical input into local regulatory submissions and activities.
THE MSL, APP role will carry responsibility for the medical aspects of the roll-out across SSA countries, with an initial focus on Kenya
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Medicine with experience in clinical medicine.
Experience in a Pharmaceutical / NGO environment preferable.
Current familiarity with healthcare environment in Kenya including opinion leaders, academia, the medical community, patient needs and related dynamics.
Demonstrated expertise in synthesizing scientific information and communicating it effectively at peer level with HCPs.
Effective and demonstrated communication skills (both oral and written), including English.
Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work in a self directed manner.
Excellent interpersonal, leadership and teamwork skills.
Management-level experience
