About this company
Cellulant
is a digital payments business. We run an ecosystem of consumers,
merchants and banks in which we facilitate payments and build value
through the value-added services we layer on top. In building this
ecosystem we serve different types of customers with different products,
in a range that includes mobile banking products, mobile credit
products, USSD, SMS, and digital content. We are currently serving
merchants and banks across 10 countries, and a wide set of industries
Our true competitive advantage lies in the ecosystem we are building – if we do a good job over the next few years, it will be the glue* that will connect everyone to everything – every consumer to every business in Africa.
We will glue together hundreds of thousands of businesses to an increasingly significant number of mobile consumers. Face of success shall be 100m active consumers spending $50-$100 on a few hundred thousand business connected to our payments ecosystem.
We aim to be Africa’s number 1 mobile commerce ecosystem by 2016.
Where we are
Cellulant is in the midst of the true transformation into a payments business – we have grown from a start-up with US$3,000 investment in 2003, to a profitable content business, to a mobile banking business serving 30% of the market in Kenya, with a pan-African client base. In the last 2 years payments has become an increasingly important part of our DNA. Over the last 6 months, we´ve decided it is our future.
Although payments are the core of our business, there is an important role in the ecosystem for a credit revenue line. Credit will build additional value for the banks, consumers, and merchants that are part of our ecosystem, and provide a stickiness to their relationships with them. We will use credit for the following three commercial propositions:
Credit 2.0 – A mobile loan disbursement platform for banks (to provide credit to (potential) consumers: this proposition ties banks into our ecosystem profitably
Credit for Goods 0.1 – Allow merchants alternative payments options that give consumers a means to purchase goods on credit, or in terms
SME Credit – Offer small merchants medium sized loans, secured by future income, to build their businesses
Using an agile approach in which products are only developed once we have clients to launch with these product streams are in different stages of maturity. Credit 2.0 is mature and has been sold across various institutions, Credit for Goods is ready for pilot with Kenya´s largest MNO, and SME Credit is awaiting the pace of our merchant payments roll-out. All these products require commercial guidance, and leaderships of the various levels of the organization that need to be coordinated to make it a success. The success of this product requires energy among country staff, product development teams, and a sense of urgency in the Management Team. This is where the role of the head of Credit comes in.
