Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UNHabitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The UNHABITAT Urban Legislation, Land and Governance Branch internship is for 4 months with a possibility of extension pending on the needs of the department.

The Internship is UNPAID and fulltime.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the needs of the unit.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer, the interns will work under the Land and Natural Resources Tenure Security Learning Initiative for East and Southern Africa Project. Specifically, the interns will:
Provide technical support in data collection and documentation of the piloting of the Social Tenure Domain Model and other GLTN land tenure interventions in selected IFAD supported projects and programmes.
Provide support on the development and implementation of propoor and gender responsive land tools on land and natural resources tenure.
Assist substantive and technical staff in organizing and documenting landrelated events and meetings.
Liaise with partners in relation to tool development, capacity development and partnership strengthening processes.

Education
  • Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a oneyear period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Studies in land administration, land management, political science, urban and rural development, GIS and planning preferred.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
