Summary:

JOB PURPOSE:To support and carry out data collection for, and study coordination of, the Nairobi
Newborn Study. This work will focus on performing quantitative nursing questionnaires to assess knowledge of key maternal and newborn interventions among nurses in hospitals across Nairobi City County. Survey coordinators will also help with administration tasks and data quality control procedures for the study. The position requires knowledge of nursing practice and theory and very good computer skills with basic programmes.

Principal Investigator

BUDGET AND RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITY:

Some responsibility for ICT hardware management to support data collection and planning for updates/additions

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
For the Health Services Research Group to:
Perform nursing questionnaire interviews with nurses on duty in maternity wards and newborn units in health facilitates across Nairobi City County;
Work closely with study investigators to facilitate coordination of the Nairobi Newborn Study and document progress of the study;
Learn basic approaches to improve data quality and perform automated analysis routines to facilitate feedback to hospitals;
Ensure compliance with programme ICT policies that span data storage, description, security etc across the survey team;
Supervise junior data entry clerks, coordinate their work and oversee its quality

QUALIFICATIONS:
Academic qualification to at least Diploma Level
Experience of work / research in a Kenyan health setting ideally in newborn care
Prior experience in work on surveys of health workers
Good communication and organisation skills
Ability to direct the work of more junior survey workers and support worker training
Good computer skills – ideally familiarity with direct data entry

Desirable Criteria:
Familiarity with REDCap software
Good knowledge of government guidelines on health care provided to sick newborns
Ability to meet deadlines and work independently to achieve project aims

COMPETENCIES:
Highly organised and structured approach to work
Ability to take consent
Familiarity with data entry forms and basic concepts of data analysis
Willingness to travel throughout Nairobi
Professional attitude towards engaging with health facilities and nurses
Comfortable with interpreting standard operating procedures and apply them to data collection
Good communication skills with willingness to provide regular updates to colleagues and prompt reply to emails
Ability to coordinate well via email and skype with overseas staff
Interest in understanding of nursing practice and newborn care
Good timekeeping and reliable

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:
Office based
Health facilities across Nairobi City County
