Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) communicates UNEP’s core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide. This post is located in UNEP/DCPI at the Nairobi duty station and the incumbent will report to the Chief of Public Advocacy and Communication.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Office of the Director and the supervision of the Chief of Public Advocacy and Communication, the Sports Advocacy Specialist is responsible for the effective and efficient performance of the following duties
Undertake activities to develop andmaintain strategic partnerships with premiere international sports organizations, associations and federations with a view to fully leveraging sports activity, event, and media opportunities for UNEP public and policy advocacy objectives. Participate in coordinating theimplementation and promotion of the fullest range of UNEP messaging through suchpartnerships and advance the environmental sustainability agenda as it pertains to the
activities, products and processes of the sporting world. Oversee and support the engagement of diverse groups in social media platforms.
Contribute to the implementation and promotion of UNEP’s strategy on sport and the environment (GC22/18III) and develop a communications plan and activities in support of the strategy. On a regular basis, review the strategy to ensure that it adapts to prevailing global agenda and is responsive to developments in the sport and the environment arena.
Contribute to coordinating and planning strategic opportunities where UNEP can leverage sport to promote and mainstream environmental issues in direct alignment with the Programme of Work and the organization’s communication strategy.
Contribute to planning, monitoring and assessing UNEP’s sports strategy and engagement; Ensure timely reporting and documentation. Undertake activities to mobilize and manage resources for the organization’s sports mandate.
Oversee and support a wide range of administrative actions and contribute to the development of legal instruments on cooperation and partnerships, development of concept papers and reports, maintenance of the UNEP sport website. Supervise junior staff. Perform any other relevant duties assigned.
