Vacancy: Regional Communications and Media Manager
Kenya Nationals OnlyThe Regional Communications Manager provides strategic and technical leadership to Plan’s Media and Communication work in the region.
S/he ensures that regional communication activities support country, regional and global
communication priorities and campaigns and effectively support Plan’s programme goals.
S/he oversees capacity development and quality assurance measures for communication in Eastern and Southern Africa (RESA) and represents the regional office in Plan’s global communication network.Dimensions of Role:
A member of the Regional Management Team (E-ROMT) and leader of the regional network covering our communication and media work in RESA.
Provides leadership and supervision to Plan’s regional media and communication team and fosters integration of programme and communication activities.
Facilitates the development of strong internal and external linkages with communication staff, peer organisations and media outlets within and beyond the region.
Advises on and manages risks related to Plan’s communication and media work in/about the RESA region.
· Develops and oversees the execution of regional office communications budget.

Typical Responsibilities1. Strategic planning and delivery
A relevant and up-to-date Regional Communication Strategy for RESA is developed, delivered and monitored, taking into account global and emerging regional programme and campaign priorities.
Plan RESA’s regional communication strategy adds value to country operations, regional and global programmes, advocacy and campaigns work, fundraising, and public relations plans and initiatives. Its implementation is monitored and progress against this is documented and shared
Support the development of sound country level communication strategies and plans which efficiently profile the importance of child-centred community development and Plan’s programme priorities
Provide high quality communications support to the attainment of Plan’s Global initiatives, campaign goals and results.
 
2. Network Leadership and Capacity Development
Establish and maintain a regional internal network for communication in order to provide direct support and capacity building for country and regional communication in their delivery of high quality communication and media work.
A vibrant and well utilised internal technical network for communication across RESA which is meeting regularly to share information and knowledge.
Plan RESA’s Planet site is updated regularly with inspiring and informative material.
Undertake capacity assessments for communication staff and teams in order to define capacity development required within COs.
Country communications staff are kept up to date with the newest developments from the communication sector and knowledge and information from other organisations is being efficiently shared to promote best practice.
Close collaboration and a shared agenda in place between the communications and programme teams to ensure quality reporting and information sharing about our work.
There is a fruitful collaboration between RESA and communication staff from National Organisations (NOs), International Headquarters (IH) and other Regional Offices (ROs)
 
3. Enhancing Organisational visibility and profile.
 Plan RESA is known for the quality and reach of its child-centred community development programmes within and beyond the region and across all entities of Plan.
Country, regional, and international media report positively and regularly about Plan’s work in Eastern and Southern Africa.
Plan RESA’s website is regularly updated with high quality articles.
Plan RESA uses social media effectively and innovatively to engage the public in its work, programme and campaign goals.
Plan RESA has regularly updated communications collateral material and publications that are being used to inform stakeholders and media about our programme work.
Plan’s global and regional reports/publications are produced to high quality and adequately promoted to media, development peers and other internal and external audiences.
 
4. Internal communication
Ensure that Plan RESA staff feel well connected to the global organisation, its vision, mission and objectives
Plan RESA’s internal communication efforts result in (i) increased reporting about our work on IH, and NO websites, and (ii) well informed fundraising efforts, particularly for emergencies.
Plan staff in RESA feel connected to the organisation through efficient management of the regional and global team briefing process, Planet and other internal communication measures.
5. Compliance with global standardsPlan’s Global Identity and communication guidelines are consistently applied and respected.
Communications and media work around Plan’s disaster focussed work is professionally and efficiently overseen and delivered, responding to organisational and global standards.
Country communications and RO staff are adequately trained on Plan’s global identity guidelines and have the skills and understanding required to apply them consistently.
Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviour

Knowledge
  • In-depth knowledge of current communications issues and trends, in both the development and humanitarian sectors.
  • Bachelor Degree in Communications and preferably Masters in Communication/Public Relations with 5 years’ experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of how the media and journalists work nationally, regionally and internationally.
  • Demonstrated experience of working as a communication manager with a focus on East and Southern Africa, preferably at regional level.
  • Proven experience to develop and implement communication and media strategies
  • Good understanding of child rights and development.
Skills
  • Exceptional conceptual and strategic thinking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships with colleagues at long distances.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation and public speaking.
