Fundraising and Resource Mobilization Experts to Commemorate the 114th Anniversary of the City of Kisumu Festival
Background Information

: Kisumu Central Business District Association (KCBDA) is created and registered within the Republic of Kenya as a membership society under the Societies Act Cap 108, Laws of Kenya as a non-religious, non- political and a not-for-profit making organization whose main objective is to promote the City of Kisumu as the most beautiful, safest, secure, environmental friendly (Millennium) City and the best commercial hub in Western Kenya and gateway to East and Central Africa for the growth of its membersKCBDA in collaboration with the City Council of Kisumu, the
County Government of Kisumu and various other stakeholders of the City of Kisumu officially recognize 20th day of December 1901 as the date of founding and origin of the City of Kisumu.

And that the 20th day of December each year shall be celebrated to observe, celebrate and commemorate the origin of the City of Kisumu.
The 1st commemoration shall be done on 20th – 26th December 2015 to mark the 114th anniversary of the City of Kisumu. The theme of the event shall focus on the following issues:
a) Ethnic / Cultural Integration: The City of Kisumu is a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic habitat. Whereas it is largely dominated by the Luo ethnic group, it is also home to the Kalenjin, Maasai, Abagusii, Nandi, Abaluhya, Kenyan Somalis, Asians, other EAC nationals among others who form the minority community. The communities need to celebrate the richness of their cultural diversities to strengthen their cohesion, tolerance and unity.

b) Economic growth: The City of Kisumu has demonstrated a slow but steady recovery from the turmoil of PEV of 2007/08. This has been occasioned by the increased macro-investment in infrastructure, building and construction and financial services and growth of the Micro & Small Enterprises (MSEs) which has created thousands of employment.The Scope of Activities for 2015  
Celebrations
  • Based on the proposed themes, the festival shall focus on the following Seven (7) broad sectors:
  • Cultural/Ethnic Cohesion: Cultural foods, traditional dances and performances, etc
  • Enterprise Development: Trade Exhibitions, Bonanza, Expo, Art shows etc etc
  • Social/Humanitarian/Charity works: Free Medical services, Visiting the aged, OVCs, Food for Street families, The sick in hospitals, HTC Services etc etc
  • Tourism: Fashion nite, Excursions, Adventures, Bull Fights, etc etc
  • Sports: Community ball games, Water sports, KPL league(K’Ogallo Derby), half marathon, Boda Boda games etc etc
  • Entertainment: Street Dances, Night Parties, Kids Festival, Comedy Night, children amusement activities etc etc
  • Environment protection & conservation: Tree planting, Public Clean up exercises etc
Critical Event Questions
  • Cultural Diversity – Does the event promote the rich multicultural history of City of Kisumu with its important contributions from varied ethnic groups?
  • Authenticity – Is the event historically accurate and reinforces positive historical images of the city.
  • Engaging – Does the event have strong emotional value and attract large numbers of visitors from outside the region.
  • Viable – Is the event sustainable with an identified audience and financial capability to become an annual signature event?
  • Community Support & Resources – Does the event demonstrate support of the community and has it incorporated available community resources?
  • Economic Impact -Will this event generate economic activity (shopping, restaurants, attractions, etc.)?
  • Uniqueness & Media Potential – Does the event have a “wow!” factor, a theme or approach that is unusual and will attract large and diverse audiences? Is the event highly visible and have the potential to earn widespread media attention?
  • Responsibility of the Fundraising and Resource Mobilization Experts
  • To design, prepare and implement distinct fundraising activities or strategies between July 2015 to December 2015.
Specifically the experts shall
  • Design, prepare and implement mechanisms for raising donations, gifts, grants from Private Corporates, FBOs, Public Institutions, Local and International NGOs, Development partners, Businesses, SHGs, CBOs & individuals
  • Design, prepare and implement mechanisms for sponsorships from Private Corporates, FBOs, Public Institutions, Local and International NGOs, Development partners, Businesses, SHGs, CBOs & individuals
  • Develop communications and PR strategy to persuade the public to support the event
  • Maintain very close relations with donors and supporters of the event
  • Effectively use all aspects of the internet (the Association’s website, email list serves, social networks, crowd-funding platforms)
  • To raise funds through special events (sponsored sports competitions, charity auctions, concerts etc.)
  • Upon the program’s completion, the experts will submit written reports to the Secretariat about his/her observations on community fundraising in and on the performance of the NGOs in the program.
Education
  • University degree in communications, media, non-profit management, psychology or sociology preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Additional academic or professional training in resource mobilization and fundraising for non-profit management, PR, communications, finance for non-profits etc. is desirable.
Availability:
  • Available from approximately July 15, 2015 to December 30, 2015, without interruption
  • Available for occasional meetings and calls with event secretariat on weekends and after business hours, as needed, during the program period.
Work Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of working as a full-time fundraising expert or 4 years as a part-time fundraiser
  • Experience working as a fundraiser in funfair, arts, culture, environmental and medical charities
  • Demonstrated track record of having raised significant amounts of money from communities and private individuals through different types of fundraising campaigns and events
  • Experience with mentoring, coaching and assisting others with their work
Attributes:
  • Strong leadership skills, ability to motivate and support others
  • Enthusiasm for the work of starter events
  • Understanding of the strengths and challenges of small, grass-roots Non-State Actors
  • Understanding of the socio-cultural particularities of the Nyanza and Western Kenya region, or willingness to learn about them
  • Strong communication and non-formal teaching skills
  • Ability to perform well under pressure
  • Ability to take the initiative; recognize and take charge of emerging challenges
  • Punctuality, meeting deadlines on time, excellent time management
  • Reliability, strong sense of responsibility, maturity
Knowledge:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current legislation and administrative practices pertaining to NGOs, including financial reporting duties, and awareness of resources for additional information and support.
  • Knowledge of banking and accounting mechanisms for charitable donations
Additional Skills:
  • Ability to set up fundraising platforms on special fundraising websites and to maintain/update existing websites
  • Demonstrated presence on social media and ability to use social media effectively
  • Ability to independently use Word and Excel and navigate basic computer setups
  • Ability and willingness to effectively and regularly use and access work-related email
