Job description IBM Research – Africa is the 12th lab in IBM’s global network of research labs and our first lab dedicated to a whole continent. Located on the campus of the Catholic University in the Karen-Langata area in Nairobi, Kenya, our goal is to become a world-class research organization that addresses Africa’s grand challenges by delivering commercially-viable innovations that impacts people’s lives. In order to deploy successful solutions, we must address many of the local constraints (e.g., illiteracy, language, infrastructure, connectivity, culture, etc.) that interfere or influence optimal human-computer interaction. These constraints affect the way that insights from data can be optimally presented to users across devices, and result in widely adopted, usable systems. This underscores a central question that we want to address, what is the future of user engagement with technologies in Africa?
To tackle this question, IBM Research – Africa, the first commercial research lab in Africa, is seeking an exceptional industrial designer or software engineer who will define novel, compelling user interfaces and interaction modes through both hardware and software. Working with an interdisciplinary team, the goal is to produce innovations in interaction technologies to help overcome the challenges that arise at the intersection of people and technology. The main focus is the development of new interaction and visualization techniques, allowing people to be interconnected and engaged in their community and the environment. This spans all aspects of communicative strategies localized and adapted to Africa: verbal (speech), non-verbal (haptics, kinesics, proxemics, etc.), visual (image, video, graphics) and written (text, SMS, infographs, etc.). The selected candidate will have the opportunity to leverage state-of-the-art technologies for augmented reality and interaction prototyping (hologram, planar, Kinect, 3D printer, etc.) to develop the next generation of commercially-viable cognitive technology solutions and services that will fundamentally change the way consumers and enterprises interact with computer systems.
We invite candidates with a strong programming background and an excellent track record in any of the following areas:
- Agents, Distributed systems, Sensors, Data analysis and mining, Human computer interfaces, ambient computing, Gaming, Image and voice processing, Machine learning, computer simulation, software engineering, computer aided design, systems engineering and co-related areas. In addition, candidates should show demonstrated success in research and development with very good technical skills (e.g., SDK, Image-Based Rendering & Light Field Rendering, 3D Graphics, etc.) as well as proven academic and publication record. A minimum of a Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing and Design or related fields is required, along with a demonstrated enduring love for setting up systems and then building or developing software on top. Industrial research internships are a plus, as is demonstrated ability to formulate and solve abstract problems derived from real-world applications.
- Required * Bachelor’s Degree * English: Fluent
- Preferred * Master’s Degree in Engineering
IBM is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
