Job Description

KMT is seeking to recruit a Livestock Processing Manager to focus on processing industries as part of the Livestock Sector strategy and work with selected ‘market actor’ (e.g. processors, county governments) partners in the meat industry to pilot, review and scale successful interventions (e.g. new or improved support services, business models, technologies, relationships, and improved coordination between industry players) with the potential to improve market systems and thereby improve sector competitiveness and the position of the poor within the sector.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Portfolio Manager – Livestock, the successful candidate will

– provide technical support to county governments who are investing in processing facilities related to, feasibility studies, PPP models, attracting investment and planning for management turn-around.

– lead the process of measuring results and reporting on livestock sector work with stakeholders, and will facilitate wider lesson learning and knowledge management from MAP interventions, in coordination with KMAP Knowledge/ Results and Knowledge, Learning and Practice, Policy and Investment and cross-cutting teams.

– Develop and manage budget and resource, ensuring that the sector team has the resources required to deliver expected results.

– Initiate and support various research process and ensure the use of evidence and results to inform strategy, promote learning and demonstrate impact and support innovation

– Manage implementing partners and staff, working to promote the market development approach in all aspects of the sector related work
Desired Skills and Experience

The Livestock Processing Manager will have:

extensive experience working at a management level within a private sector in the meat industry or have at least 2 years of experience working on private sector development programs in the livestock sector preferably including pastoral communities;

experience in the hands on meat industry from livestock procurement and marketing, slaughtering, processing (de-boning and cutting), packaging and refrigeration;

extensive knowledge in modern processing equipment through the entire sector;

knowledge of exporting of fresh and frozen product and will understand export transport in shipping to other countries also understand export requirements in paper work and payment methods;

have experience of stakeholder engagement; developing partnerships and managing relationships with donors, private sector, civil society actors, consultancies and government; and

ideally have a large network of contacts within the industry in Kenya and abroad.

In addition all applicants will:

– have strong relationship management skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships, engage, influence and motivate a diversity of audiences both within target communities, beneficiaries, private sector players, donors and senior government decision makers.

– have strong financial management and reporting skills with experience managing sub contractual relationships and/or grant agreements

– have strong analytical skills, excellent writing skills and be proficient in the use of MS Office tools

– possess a high level of integrity and commitment to the vision of the organisation

– be an enthusiastic, pragmatic and energetic hands-on individual
