Job Description

BACKGROUND

The Global Bible Translation team facilitates Bible translation through training, research and development, reputation management and project support. It provides Bible Societies with training and support, develops translation software, engages in scholarly research, develops relationships with partner agencies and Churches, supports fundraising for translation and maintains and assures quality.

JOB SUMMARY

To provide excellent professional training and coaching, including project support, enabling Bible Society Translation staff to produce high quality Bible translations which are appropriate to their local situation and fully accepted by their intended audience.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Building capacity of national Bible Society Translation staff to manage and oversee translation projects through all their stages by providing expert advice, coaching, training and mentoring to those working on translation projects in Bible Societies.
  • Giving technical aid and professional assistance to Bible Societies, translation committees and translators on all translation related activity including providing quality assurance in translation standards.
  • Articulating and ensuring buy-in from Bible Societies, churches and missions with regard to UBS translation policies and procedures for translation projects, thus ensuring that highest standards are maintained and that translation work is aligned with global policy and procedure.
  • As an expert in linguistics, providing guidance concerning the translation quality standards of the UBS Fellowship.
  • Helping to organise, facilitate, lead and where appropriate teach at translator training workshops/programmes, seminars and similar events.
  • Participating in (and where appropriate, taking a lead on) Translation advocacy activities in Bible Societies and churches.
  • Maintaining expertise in area of scholarly specialisation, participating in professional development programmes and events as required in order to advise, enable and support the work of translation.
  • Reporting regularly to line manager regarding activities, problems, evaluation of progress.
  • Taking an active involvement in offering expert advice and guidance on the work of translation of texts performed ‘on the ground’ by Bible Societies or other partners.
  • Actively supporting and overseeing groups of translators through coaching, mentoring and other supports.
  • Performing any other duties as required by line manager.
Essential Skills and experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (in English).
  • Experienced in operating in a multi cultural environment with sensitivity to different world views and opinions of the financial world.
  • Comfortable working in a Christian organisation with sensitivity to the breadth of church support that UBS enjoys.
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally nationally and overseas.
  • Self-motivated, with enough personal confidence to be open to continuous learning and development.
  • Setting an example by demonstrating an ability to manage one’s own emotions and behaviours, particularly through times of change.
  • PhD or equivalent in linguistics or biblical studies.
  • MA or equivalent in complementary discipline.
  • Pedagogical skills with related experience in facilitating, teaching and training adults.
  • Evidence of scholarly contribution through published journals, texts and articles in related areas.
  • The ability to work globally across time and space in a virtual working environment.
  • Able to work in such a way so as to compliment the Christian values and ethos of the organisation, while promoting interconfessionality.
  • Aware of cultural difference and able to work flexibly in order to work across cultural boundaries.
  • Experienced at working in a team but able to work independently and achieve goals and targets
  • Demonstrated expertise in Biblical Knowledge and exegesis with a specialism in which expertise can be demonstrated.
  • Experience of translating the Bible.
  • A flexible approach and a willingness to adapt style and delivery in order to achieve best results.
  • Experience in managing projects and delivery of KPIs.
Desirable Skills and experience
  • The ability to communicate confidently (verbal and written) in a language other than English.
  • Experience of working with global networked teams, and a track record in using all available communication tools in the context of a dispersed staff team.
  • Experience of managing others is desirable, along with an understanding of how to help them learn and remain motivated in the task
