An excellent Cover letter

A covering letter is vital for giving a voice to your CV. Use the covering letter to promote your skills and experience in a way that fits the advertised role.  It’s your chance to put forward a case as to why
you are the perfect candidate for the job in question:
  • As with your CV, keep it clear, concise and factual
  • Answer what is requested of the applicant in the job specification
  • Convey your personality without being flippant or bragging
  • Include brief examples of work that demonstrates your abilities
  • Use the final paragraph to sum up your suitability for the role
  • Offer to provide references upon request

Formatting tips

  • Format your covering letter using Microsoft Word and keep it to one page
  • Use a font size and style that is easy to read, such as Arial 9pt
  • At the top left-hand side of the letter, include the name and job title of the recipient, along with the company name and their full address
  • At the top right-hand side of the letter, include your name, postal address, phone number and email address
  • Include the date above the salutation
  • Do your best to find out the name of the recipient
  • Open with ‘Dear Mr or Mrs’ if you know the recipient name and ‘Dear Sir or Madam’ if you do not
  • Insert the advertised job title and job reference code in bold beneath the salutation and before the first sentence
  • At the end of the letter, sign off using ‘yours sincerely’ if you know the recipient’s name and ‘yours faithfully’ if you do not
  • Sign the letter and type your name underneath
  • Proofread, proofread and proofread again
Good luck in securing that all-important interview!
