APHRC Data Systems Manager and NUHDSS Data Manager

The African Population & Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.
The Center seeks to fill the positions Data Systems Manager and Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) Data Manager.

Data Systems Manager

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and/or maintenance of highly efficient data management systems for all data collected at the Center;
  • Manage database programmers to ensure they develop high quality software applications for various projects;
  • Determine and facilitate the acquisition of resources needed to complete work in a timely and cost effective manner;
  • Lead efforts to develop new data capture tools that utilize new technologies, especially in the area of electronic data collection;
  • Provide leadership in the development of work scheduling tools to allow planning of data processing activities;
  • Ensure software applications and databases are developed and maintained to internationally approved standards;
  • Ensure data quality checks are developed and implemented;
  • Oversee data entry and filing processes;
  • Ensure preliminary cleaned data is available to data analysts for further cleaning and preparation of analytical data sets; and
  • Manage staff in the data processing unit and provide oversight for data processing.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in information sciences, computer science or related area;
  • 7 years’ post qualification experience, preferably in a research institution;
  • Excellent leadership skills;
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills; and
  • Experience managing longitudinal data management systems is desirable.
NUHDSS Data Manager

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to study design and analysis plan in proposal development;
  • Compute sample size and power calculations for research studies;
  • Develop pre-analysis and analysis plans;
  • Data cleaning and analysis including doing all required consistency checks for the project assigned;
  • Develop data cleaning guidelines for project(s);
  • Document data sets according to the Center’s guidelines on data documentation, archiving and sharing;
  • Extract data and prepare analytical files;
  • Develop template syntax files for research staff to use in creating various data sets;
  • Produce event monitoring indicators on regular basis (monthly, quarterly, annually) and feedback to the field team indicators that would help to improve data quality;
  • Generate annual profile indicators (percentages, proportions, rates, etc.) on longitudinal studies;
  • Write technical reports on data issues;
  • Perform exploratory and advanced statistical analysis of data;
  • Assist in training other staff members on data analysis;
  • Conduct literature reviews, and participate in scientific writing;
  • Participate in the development, review and translation of research tools;
  • Participate in pre-testing of data capture and entry platforms; and
  • Participate in training of field interviewers.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in Statistics, Demography, Public Health or equivalent;
  • 5 years’ post qualification experience, preferably in a research institution;
  • Good knowledge of and significant experience working in a Health and Demographic Surveillance System;
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills;
  • Good knowledge of longitudinal data analysis (e.g. Event History Analysis); and
  • Knowledge of Stata package is desirable.
