About Innovations for Poverty Action: Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a non-profit research organization that creates and evaluates approaches to solving development problems.
IPA disseminates the results of its evaluations to policymakers, practitioners, investors and donors around the world.
IPA seeks to invite qualified applicants for the position of Research Associate in Kenya for a project that will compare learning outcomes in low cost private schools relative to other available options in the vicinity.
There is tremendous growth and innovation in the low cost private school market and this project aims to use a randomized controlled trial to better understand the effectiveness of such schools relative to public school options.
The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand field management experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research, particularly in the area of education.
The Principal Investigators for this project are Anthony Keats (Wesleyan University), Michael Kremer (Harvard University) Isaac Mbiti (University of Virginia) and Owen Ozier (World Bank)
The Senior Research Associate will work closely with academic researchers and other field staff to perform a variety tasks including, but not limited to:

The Senior Research Associate will work closely with academic researchers and other field staff to perform a variety tasks including, but not limited to:
- Overseeing staff working on the project,
- Designing survey questionnaires,
- Conducting qualitative research,
- Running pilot exercise,
- Help in refining study design and surveying instruments,
- Managing survey teams,
- Negotiating contracts with survey firms where necessary,
- Overall finance oversight on the project including approvals,
- Checking and analyzing data, cleaning data and assisting in preliminary analysis,
- Assisting in the writing of project reports and policy memos,
- Coordinating with local partners running the programs being evaluated, and Supporting outreach to policymakers in country.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- Master’s degree in economics, social sciences, public policy, or related fields.
- Candidates with a bachelor’s degree and significant fieldwork experience will also be considered.
- Training in development economics.
- Prior work or volunteer experience in development in developing countries a plus.
- Experience living and conducting field research in a developing country is a strong plus.
- Several years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills.
- The ability to present positions and to negotiate with senior officials.
- Fluency and excellent communication skills in English.
- Swahili language skills are a plus
- Flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently as a team player.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations.
- Knowledge of Stata (strongly preferred), SAS, or other data analysis software.
- Familiarity with randomized controlled trials.
