COURSES
YOU CAN PURSUE IN KENYA AND END UP BEING JOBLESS FOR A DECADE
ACTUARIAL
SCIENCE
Rated highly in Europe,
especially United Kingdom, Actuarial Science is a course that can really
challenge you in class regardless of your IQ.the course was introduced in Kenya
early 2000 and since then almost half of the universities in Kenya have adopted
its curriculum.
It’s a course reserved
for who is who in class because it always attracts top cream in national exams.
The duration for study is 4 years but that is just a foundation because you
have to do professional exams in order for you to be regarded as a professional
Actuary. The sad thing is that in Kenya, only a handful have completed and
passed the papers.
What is heart breaking
is the fact that regardless of the energy you put towards achieving the dream
of being an Actuary you will still be paid less than Bachelor of Commerce graduates.
In Kenya, out of 1000
students who graduate annually only 10% are absorbed in the job market one year
after graduation. The average salary for Actuaries in Kenya is Ksh 70,000 which
is way below that of Accountants. As I write this more than 30% of those who
have graduated from college since 2001 are jobless while 80 % of those employed
are not performing roles directly related to Actuarial Science.
TEACHING
Though teaching is
regarded as one of the most loved career in Kenya, many graduates have given up
on the profession because of lack of available opportunities. I personally know
many Kenyans who graduated with a degree in Education in the year 2000 and are
still jobless. The average salary for a teacher is 35,000! This is equivalent
to pocket money.
BACHELOR
OF COMMERCE/MBA
Everyone in Kenya is
rushing to pursue MBA or BCOM but who will employ you. Unless you want to be an
entrepreneur don’t rest all your hopes in that “useless’paper”.MBA is useful
when you are already employed and you are aiming for a promotion but unfortunately,
with our peculiar habit, we rush to do something because you heard your
neighbor do the same. According to the latest statistics only 10 % of MBA
graduates secure jobs one year after graduation; majority are selling insurance
products to earn a commission, others are tarmac king up to now.
Other
courses include:
SOCIOLOGY
ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCE
MUSIC
SPORTS
MANAGEMENT
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE
FOOD SCIENCE
